Winter Olympics

Winter Olympics has been around for a long time, changing as the years pass. The ancient Winter Olympics started in 1928, and the modern Winter Olympics reflect multiple changes to the sports. The Winter Olympics are exciting to watch because the ancient Winter Olympics show how it all started, because the modern Winter Olympics reflect all of the changes, and because I enjoy watching hockey.
To begin, the ancient Winter Olympics started in Chamonix, France in 1924. Many countries participated in the Winter Olympics: Norway, Finland, America, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, Great Britain, Austria, and France. (“Fact Monster”) As a result of winning, the winner would be awarded a medal. Some of the events that the competitors competed in are: bobsled, ice hockey, figure skating, Nordic skiing, and speed skating. The second Winter Olympics was in St. Moritz, Switzerland. They were plagued with warm weather, which slowed some events and cancelled the 10,000 meter speed skating race. (“InfoPlease” 1-4) This is just the beginning.
In addition to ancient Winter Olympics, modern Winter Olympics brings multiple changes, which consist of more participants and more events. More than thirty countries participated in the modern Winter Olympics. (“InfoPlease”1-4) Some of the new events are: Biathlon, Freestyle skiing, and Luge. (“Fact Monster”) Every country that won an event ended up taking a medal home.
Above all, hockey is the most exciting sport to watch, because ice skating is fun. The U.S. only holds two gold medals to date, and the Soviet Union (eight gold medals) and Canada (seven gold medals) are continuing to stay at the top. (“InfoPlease”1-4) The Soviet Union and Canada are the U.S.’s strongest competitors in this event. Canada does have the most Stanley Cups, so they will probably pull ahead of the Soviet Union. (“Fact Monster”) This is one sport that will continue to be exciting to watch.
After all, the Winter Olympics has been around for a long time, and everyone has watched as the Winter Olympics transformed into a worldwide competition. Many families have enjoyed keeping up with the Winter Olympics because the ancient Winter Olympics display how it all started, because the modern Winter Olympics demonstrate all of the changes, and because watching hockey is exciting.
